LWV Observer Corp

LWV Observers provide a significant service to our League in that through their information, ideas for Forums and Town Hall meetings are generated and questions for candidates at our Forums are suggested. It is important for the League to gain the community visibility provided by our presence at City Council and School Board meetings.

A short training session is all that is needed to get you started. Please give joining the Observer Core your consideration. Even if you are unable to be an Observer, LWV members are encouraged to attend Council and Board meetings periodically as part of their civic responsibility.

For information, contact Christina Schlitt.

Will you serve on a committee?

At the 2010 National Convention, League members voted to research and study two topics:

1 The federal role in education
2 Privatization of public services

If you are interested in either one of these topics and would like to serve on a study committee or other committees, please contact any board member, or make your interest known at the Annual Meeting on May 14. Information will be provided to members later this year.

"Running and Winning" Steering Committee

The Running and Winning workshop presented by the LWVGP and supported by the LWVGP Ed Fund is an interactive workshop for high school girls to learn leadership skills and to consider careers in public service. Women in leadership positions, including elected officials, participate as mentors. There is the opportunity for the girls to role-play as they develop their own mock-election. We have presented this workshop for three consecutive years around the high schools' winter break.

We are in the process of building a steering committee to plan the program for 2011. Please call me or email me if you are interested. The steering committee requires at least 10 members to plan the day-long workshop. Some of the committee positions that need to be filled include tasks such as:

Contacting our local high schools to encourage participation from the students;
Inviting women elected officials;
Purchasing and preparing the materials for the participants;
Training our workshop facilitators;
Venue and menu;
Fundraising
Overseeing the many tasks related to the program the day of the workshop.

Running and Winning has become a signature event of the Grosse Pointe League of Women Voters, and you will have fun putting the workshop together! Believe me or just ask those members that have been there!

For additional information, see Running and Winning.

Respectfully,
Christina Schlitt
